NSA Scandal Reveals

Cloud Computing has been facing a massive growth trend in the recent years with much more to come ahead. But at the same time, there is a dire need to consider certain factors while using this technology that has been brought forward by the recent NSA scandal (PRISM Project).

The said scandal has highlighted the significance of data center location offered to you by your provider. This issue has always been overshadowed in the past but now it has finally brought to light. Thanks to the NSA Scandal.

PRISM is the project run by the US National Security Agency (NSA). Under this project, NSA has been keeping an eye on all kind of communications over the internet that take place in between US and foreign nationals. The confirmation of this project was made recently by the US Government that has spread waves around the world.

According to an official statement from the Obamas administration said:

. The program [PRISM] is subject to oversight by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, the Executive Branch, and Congress. It involves extensive procedures, specifically approved by the court, to ensure that only non-U.S. persons outside the U.S. are targeted, and that minimize the acquisition, retention and dissemination of incidentally acquired information about U.S. persons..

Why Is It Necessary To Know The Geographical Location Of Your Data Center?

In the beginning years of computing technology, data used to be stored within isolated but local systems to ensure the data security. But the cloud technology has revolutionized the computing world by allowing its users to access data from anywhere with the help of pocket-friendly on-demand cloud hosting services.

As said earlier, NSA scandal has made people realize how crucial it is to know where your data center is located. Here are few factors attached with this realization.

NSA Scandal Reveals

More Distance, More Risk

Always choose a cloud provider who has its data centers located near your region. This is because increased distance makes the latency to increase as well that severely affects the performance. Businesses would not prefer to have services offering low speed and poor performance.

Data centers located at distant places are connected using submarine communication cables that often get damaged due to several different reasons. Therefore, using a distant cloud provider increases risk.

Different Business Environment in Different Regions

Each country has its own business cultures and norms. And it is necessary to adhere with the prevailing trends and cultures in the country. You may find it difficult to conduct some business or venture with the officials from other country with different business cultures and norms.

Similarly, if you are using the services of a distant cloud provider, you may face differences in terms of speaking language, time zones and local business cultures. These differences can cost you greatly in all aspects. Therefore, it is recommended to use a local cloud service provider for better services and reduced risks.

Legal Implications

A legal implication is considered as the most important factor in this issue. If your data is stored in servers located in some other country, then the legal implications of that country will govern your stored data. This is due to the fact that each country has different National privacy laws.

What if the law of the country where your data is stored brings in certain amendments that will compromise the security and privacy of your data? You will simply feel helpless as you cant surpass that country’s law. Therefore, using the local provider is advised as there will be same legal implications for you and your data center.

What’s to Come Next?

It is expected that a time will come when same international standards will be adopted by every country making the cloud computing usage much easier. But currently, no clear situation can be seen incase of national statutory requirements.

Recently, an announcement came out from Australian Government officials saying that they will review the impact made on the Australian Nationals’ data possessed by numerous tech giants in US under the project PRISM. Apparently, other countries are likely to follow the suit innear future.
